Acute Pulmonary Reactions to Irritant Gases

Asthma, RADS (reactive airways dysfunction syndrome) or pulmonary oedema in persons exposed to irritant gases (e.g. nitrogen dioxide, chlorine) or to irritant substances inhaled in other states (e.g. dishwasher detergent, sodium hydroxide dust) can be prevented by immediate administration of inhaled corticosteroid. Workplaces where inhalable irritant substances are handled should keep inhaled corticosteroid available.
