Rethinking technology in museums. Future Perspectives on Education offers an in-depth analysis of the influence of digital innovation in relation to museum education. It goes beyond the model of a passive observation mindset and examines how contemporary technologies (artificial intelligence, immersive technology in the form of virtual and augmented reality, tactile interfaces, and neurotechnologies) could redefine learning, access opportunities, and opportunities for participation in museums. It presents a pedagogical and critical analysis of how these technologies could be exploited in education, ultimately leading us to a shift from a transmission-based mode of education to a student-centered mode of education, which in turn leads to the development of participatory, inclusive, and co-creative practices. These chapters consider not only theoretical points of view, but also how these could be exploited from an applied perspective, addressing the issues of strategic planning, sustainability, ethics, and professional workforce development necessitated by any digital transformation. Finally, by linking empirical research with a visionary perspective, the work offers a view in which museums are seen as living ecosystems of knowledge production, social innovation, and civic discourse, becoming central actors in cultural and educational life in the digital age.
