In 2019 the 250th anniversaryof the birth of Alexander vonHumboldt and the 100thanniversary of the death of ErnstHaeckel offered the opportunity toreconsider their contribution to thenatural sciences, to cosmopolitanvision, to a transdisciplinaryapproach, and to the discoveryof interconnected systems. Theconcepts of what von Humboldtcalled “Naturgemälde” andHaeckel referred to as “Ecology”imply global links between bioticand abiotic realms, and thepandemic somehow amplified theseriousness of those studies. Theimaginative glance of the two menalso attests to the value of keepingscientific, humanistic, and artisticthinking together, a significant linefor landscape design.IT.
