Allergic Rhinitis

The connection and interrelatedness between rhinitis and asthma must be borne in mind, and whenever possible the investigations and treatment should include both conditions. The removal of allergens should only be attempted if they are causing symptoms; there is no need to avoid natural environmental allergens purely as a precaution. The patient should be referred for specialist care in the following cases: suspected occupational rhinitis, where desensitisation therapy is considered or the symptoms are severe and unresponsive to treatment.
