Il Guerriero di Castiglione di Ragusa

The 1999 discovery of an archaic limestone relief at Castiglione di Ragusa—depicting a mounted warrior flanked by a sphinx and a bull, and bearing an archaic Greek inscription—provides unprecedented insight into Archaic Sicilian history. Dedicated to Pyrrinos by the artist Skyl(l)os around the late seventh or early sixth century BC, this monumental slab exemplifies the complex cultural synthesis between indigenous Sicels and Greek colonists in south-eastern Sicily. The proceedings of the 2000 Milan seminar present a multifaceted investigation into the site's archaeological and urban context, the epigraphic and linguistic features of the inscription, and the regional historical dynamics involving Syracuse, Camarina, and local populations. Rather than portraying indigenous communities as passive subjects of Hellenization, the volume highlights their active role in adapting Greek artistic, linguistic, and social models to assert local elite authority, offering a vital framework for understanding ethnic interactions in the central Mediterranean.
