A Catalogue of Sculptures from the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia.

This study examines a group of forty-four late Republican and early Imperial marble sculptures from the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis at Lake Nemi, housed in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia. Acquired in 1896 via Lucy Wharton Drexel and A.L. Frothingham, their provenance—long subject to scholarly doubt—is definitively confirmed through archival documentation and excavation records from 1895. The collection features diverse sculptural categories, including over-life-sized cult statue heads, small-scale votive statuettes, decorative herms, architectural elements, and relief-decorated marble amphorae. Stable isotope analysis reveals a predominant use of imported Greek and Asia Minor marbles (e.g., Parian, Pentelic, Dokeimion) for late Hellenistic pieces, alongside local Carrara marble for Imperial additions. Stylistic and technical attributes—such as elongated proportions, eclectic iconographies, and extensive piecing with iron dowels—closely align these votives with East Mediterranean workshops, particularly from Rhodes, demonstrating the profound influence of Hellenistic artistic traditions on Central Italian sanctuary dedications.
