Consuetudinis Amor

This collective volume honors the scholarly legacy of Jean-Pierre Callu through twenty-four multidisciplinary contributions reflecting his dual expertise in Late Roman numismatics and Latin literature. Bridging economic, political, and cultural dynamics from the second to the sixth centuries CE, the collected essays explore the profound transformations of the Late Antique Mediterranean. Numismatic and economic studies examine gold hoarding patterns, weight loss, monetary devaluation, and the purchasing power of Late Roman currency. Simultaneously, literary and historiographical inquiries analyze imperial ideology, pagan-Christian intellectual exchanges, patristic pastoral care, and the textual traditions of major authors such as Symmachus, Ammianus Marcellinus, and Sulpicius Severus. Spanning regions from Roman Africa and the Danube to the Eastern Mediterranean, this work demonstrates how integrated methodological approaches—combining material culture, epigraphy, and philology—elucidate the complexities of civic identity, imperial power, and religious evolution during the transition from the High Empire to Late Antiquity.
