Labra di età romana in marmi bianchi e colorati

This comprehensive volume offers an in-depth investigation into large circular Roman basins and their supports across various archaeological, historical, and antiquarian contexts. It features a detailed typology of the basins and central supports, examines production systems and patronage, and explores Greek prototypes such as loutéria and perirrhantéria, concluding with exhaustive catalogues and material indexes. Tracing the evolution from Greek origins to the late antique period, the study highlights how these monolithic stone and marble basins transformed within Roman domestic, provincial, and urban architecture. These versatile basins served multiple vital functions, operating as elements for personal hygiene and thermal baths, serving as water reservoirs and decorative fountains, and functioning as sacred receptacles for lustral water in religious and ritual environments.
