Prosopographia etrusca I.1

This volume presents the first extensive prosopographical survey of Etruscan families (gentes) within Southern Etruria, tracing their socio-economic status, political alliances, and lineage development from the emergence of hereditary naming conventions in the late eighth century BCE to full Romanization in the first century BCE. Synthesizing epigraphic, literary, and archaeological data, the study establishes a comprehensive corpus of 629 cataloged families across six primary geographical sectors: Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Vulci, Volsinii-Orvieto, Veii, and the Faliscan territory. By analyzing funerary contexts, grave goods, spatial distributions within family tombs (ipogei), and public magistracies (cursus honorum), the author reconstructs genealogical trees (stemmata), diachronic family developments, and inter-gentilician networks. Furthermore, detailed morphological analyses of original Etruscan nomina provide critical insights into local family origins, geographic mobility, and the integration of foreign elites. This fundamental reference work fills a long-standing void in Etruscology, offering an empirical foundation for future prosopographical and historical inquiry into ancient Etruscan society.
