Etruscan Mirrors - Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum. USA 4

This catalogue documents fifty-five Etruscan and Praenestine bronze mirrors, handle fragments, and modern fabrications preserved across twelve institutional collections in the Northeastern United States. Presenting fully illustrated catalogue entries alongside precise profile sections and detailed technical analyses, the work systematically organizes each artifact by physical typology—ranging from simple circular discs and box mirrors to elaborate tang and solid-cast hand mirrors—rather than relying on uncertain chronological frameworks. The entries provide rigorous physical descriptions, condition reports, measurements, and contextual histories, including crucial reassessments of unprovenanced pieces and late nineteenth-century tomb assemblages such as the "Toscanella Tomb" group in Philadelphia. Scholarly attention is directed toward iconographic interpretations of classical and Italic mythological scenes, border and extension ornaments, and stylistic links to known Etruscan workshops. An essential research tool, this volume advances the comprehensive documentation of ancient metallic arts within the ongoing global Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum initiative.
