Maschere e personaggi del teatro greco

This volume represents a fundamental study on ancient theatrical coroplastic art through the exceptional documentation yielded by the Greek necropolis of Lipari. The work catalogs and analyzes over a thousand terracottas—including model masks and figurines—datable from the 4th to the first half of the 3rd century BCE, offering an invaluable repertoire for the history of Greek theater, tragedy, and comedy. The authors examine local artisanal production in close connection with funerary dionysism and grave goods, highlighting the iconographic, stylistic, and technical peculiarities of the finds. Through careful comparative analysis, the text illuminates not only the evolution of scenic masks, from Sophocles and Euripides to New Comedy, but also testifies to the extraordinary cultural vitality and central importance of theatrical practice in the society of Magna Graecia's Lipari.
