Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Italia, 79. Fasc. I

Published as Fascicle LXXIX of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (Italia), this monograph offers a comprehensive catalog and rigorous stylistic analysis of the Early South Italian red-figure pottery housed in the Museo Nazionale Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia. The volume focuses on Proto-Italiote, Lucanian, and Early Apulian ceramic productions, detailing iconic vessels attributed to influential masters such as the Pisticci, Amykos, Cyclops, and Sisifo Painters. Riccardi contextualizes the collection within the 19th-century antiquarian tradition of the Jatta family while evaluating the material through modern archaeological frameworks. By re-examining iconographic themes—ranging from mythological sagas and theatrical representations to athletic and funerary scenes—the text elucidates the complex dynamics of cultural exchange, social self-representation, and hellenization among the native Peucetian elites. Ultimately, this work serves as an essential reference for understanding regional workshop outputs, distribution networks, and South Italian vase painting.
