Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Italia, 80. Fasc. II

This volume of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum catalogs a key selection of Middle Apulian red-figure pottery from the Museo Nazionale Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia, dated between 370 and 340 BC. The text provides meticulous stylistic analyses and contextual details for two primary artistic groups: minor painters transitioning from the Plain Style toward Ornate influences, and the prolific Workshop of the Ilioupersis Painter. By examining iconic mythic scenes, such as the madness of Lycurgus, alongside minor works (opera minora), the author illuminates the technical evolution, iconographic complexity, and workshop organization of South Italian ceramic production. Furthermore, the study highlights how the preference for specific vessel shapes and ritualized imagery—spanning Dionysological, erotic, and indigenous themes—reflected the distinct cultural demands and funerary practices of the local Peucetian elite.
