Il volume raccoglie 16 studi: 15 sono già stati pubblicati tra il 1986 e il 2013, ma sono stati tutti aggiornati e alcuni completamente riscritti nel 2018; uno è invece inedito. Essi sono distribuiti in quattro sezioni, Metodologia, Etnografia, Politologia e fortuna. Ne esce un ritratto di Polibio storico universale, curioso dell' altro, ma anche provinciale, sempre memore delle sue origini arcadi, alla luce delle quali legge il passato e il presente della Grecia; di fronte a Roma lo sforzo di comprensione è generoso, ma in ultima analisi fallimentare: era forse impossibile per un uomo a-religioso come Polibio capire il popolo più pio della terra; il prezzo dell'incomprensione fu la sua estraneità rispetto alla società romana e, in ultima analisi, la sua solitudine. This volume gathers 16 essays: 15 of them have been originally published from 1986 to 2013, but they have been updated and someones wholly rewritten in 2018; on the contrary chapter XIV is new. The book is divided in four sections, Methodology, Ethnography, Politics and Reception. Polybius was a universal historian, deeply concerned to otherness', but also affected by his Arcadian origins, which led him to a peculiar interpretation of Greek past and present. Face to Rome, his effort of analysis was generous, but at last ending in failure: a not religious man like Polybius was not perhaps able to unterstand the most pious people on the earth; the price of this misunderstanding was his own otherness' to the Roman society and consequently his loneliness.
