Tarquinia

This monograph presents a comprehensive archaeological and prosopographical investigation into Tarquinia and its surrounding territory during the critical historical transition between Hellenism and Romanization (fourth century BC to first century AD). By re-evaluating published material alongside unpublished context data from key funerary complexes—such as Monterozzi (Calvario and Fondo Scataglini), Fondo Maggi, and Ripagretta—the research conducts a diachronic, functional analysis of grave goods, grave design, and burial practices to trace evolving social stratification, gender roles, and ritual behaviors. Furthermore, the volume incorporates an extensive epigraphic corpus detailing the nomina gentilicia across coastal and inland southern Etruria, offering new prosopographical insights into local aristocracies and lower social strata. Ultimately, the study illustrates how Tarquinia's material culture and civic identity dynamically adapted to external economic shifts and Roman political integration.
