The long acquaintance with the artist and her active participation in the life of the music theatre make Franca Cella’s book not only the critical basis of studies on Leyla Gencer, but also an example of interrelation between musicological analysis, reconstruction of artistic environment and narrative flow. The English translation presents the 1986 text substantially unchanged. As the author writes in her new foreword, at that time ‘the protagonist was present and active in the dialogue with me and this book serves as a document of performances and meetings grasped in the climate of the exceptionality of the events and revivals realised then for the first time’. The book is completed by a new final chapter, covering the period from 1986 to 2008, by comprehensive, informative, updated back matter and by a rich selection of black and white and coloured photographs.
