Descrizione

Roman road networks served as the structural foundation of imperial expansion, administrative integration, and long-term territorial control across three continents. Beyond their initial strategic and military purposes, these un-tolled public thoroughfares facilitated extensive trade, demographic mobility, and cultural exchange, ultimately fostering widespread institutional and cultural unity throughout the empire. URBAN infrastructure, characterized by dense networks of specialized street types (vici, clivi, angiporti), reflected complex municipal challenges including traffic regulation, noise pollution, and waste management. EXTRAURBAN and consular routes transformed into enduring civic monuments, systematically mapped via milestones (miliaria) and maintained under administrative curatorship. By linking local topographies directly to imperial capitals through landmark arteries such as the Via Appia, Flaminia, and Egnatia, Roman engineering created a durable logistical paradigm that shaped Western European spatial organization well into the modern era.
