Lanuvium

Analysing archival documentation and historical cartography, this volume explores the archaeological remains of northern Lanuvium and its surrounding territory. Central to the investigation are the late nineteenth-century notes and maps compiled by Rodolfo Lanciani, which document numerous ancient structures—primarily suburban villas, cisterns, and sepulchres—that have since been altered or destroyed by modern urbanization and agricultural practices. The study traces the historical landscape from the Republican period, characterized by the adoption of opus incertum and extensive terracing, through the Imperial age, marked by brick-faced concrete and villa expansion along the Via Appia. Ultimately, this research provides a comprehensive topographical synthesis of the ancient landscape, bridging archival evidence with field reconnaissance to reconstruct the settlement patterns of the ager lanuvinus.
